Food trucks in Alpine – here’s what you need to know

Whether you live in the area or are visiting, it never hurts to be armed with information before hitting the food truck scene here in Alpine. With seven active food trucks in Alpine, there’s something available for just about every taste. Find your flavor, pull up a seat, and enjoy the spring weather with some tasty food truck fare that you can only find in Alpine.

November 2018 – Please note my updates on the closed businesses. Sad stuff, y’all.

Chop’dOUT OF BUSINESS serves natural soups, salads, wraps and smoothies out of their bright green trailer located in the parking lot across from the Holland Hotel at 208 W. Holland Avenue. They use organic ingredients, and locally sourced food items as much as possible. I especially love their Feel Good Soup, and you can’t go wrong with any of the salads or wraps. They’ll be open from Monday to Saturday from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. until the March 24th, then resume regular hours of Tuesday to Saturday 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Gluten-free items are available.

Cow Dog serves the most delectable and unique 100% beef hot dogs you’ll ever meet. They have items other than hot dogs, including several vegan and veggie options for those not into hot dogs but still hungry for something flavorful from Cow Dog. My personal favorite is the El Pastor, and today I’ll share the recipe that chef extraordinaire Alan so graciously gave me a couple years ago. Don’t be intimidated by the hot dog options – they’re all distinctly delicious. And, always go for the “Big” dog… it’s about twice the size of the “Little” dog, and you’ll want to have a few more bites, trust me. Located 215 E. Holland Ave. in the parking lot of Tumbleweed Laundry and Plaine Coffee (they have ice cream and pastries, too), they’ll be open Wednesday through Saturday, 11:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Incidentally, Cow Dog is the “oldest” truck in town, having unleashed its amazing flavors in February 2010.

Fish Cat – NO LONGER IN BUSINESS –  is the place to find organic, delightful Japanese food in Alpine. There’s also a sake trailer to satisfy your adult beverage thirst (beer, wine and sake are available in the little trailer).  The wholesome and organic menu changes as locally sourced goods are available, and also depending on what delicious home-style Japanese food Chef Seiko chooses to feed us. Don’t leave without at least one order of Sesame Noodles. Located on historic Murphy Street behind the Amtrak Station, Fish Cat offers gluten-free and vegan options, and will be open Saturday and Sunday from noon until about 8 p.m., unless she sells out earlier.

G-Ma’s Food Truck is the food truck to visit for breakfast tacos, a variety of burritos and more. Check them out, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the parking lot at W. Avenue E. and 8th Street. (Courtesy photo)

Tokyo Sushi – OUT OF BUSINESS? – is the newest truck in town. This Midland favorite can now be found behind the Ole Crystal Bar at 412 E. Holland Avenue, and serves a variety of sushi, fried rice, potstickers, rib-eyes and teriyaki chicken meals among other items. Get your bubble tea at Tokyo Sushi! Open Wednesday and Thursday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and 4-9 p.m.; Friday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., 4 p.m. to 2 a.m.; Saturday, 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Sunday from 12-9 p.m.

Tri La Bite has a little bit of everything that a hungry person is looking for… from salads and sandwiches to chicken-n-waffles and stuffed baked potatoes, the specials of the day are unique and unexpected… from Vietnamese Noodle Soup to a Gyro basket, know that it will be finger-licking good stuff. If brisket is on the menu in any form or fashion, order it. Same goes for the $10 Ribeye platter. Vegetarian and gluten-free options available. Located at 605 E. Holland in the parking lot across from Sonic, they’ll be open 11-a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

The food truck is covered by signatures of first-time patrons. We signed the hood. It's covered. That's a pretty busy 11 months, in my opinion.

The Window can be found behind the Ole Crystal Bar at 412 E. Holland Avenue, and serves some of the tastiest burgers and loaded fries around. Open for dinner and late night weekend meals, make The Window a stop in your food truck excursion. Open Monday-Wednesday from 4-10 p.m., Thursday- Saturday from 4 p.m.-midnight and Sunday from noon-6 p.m. And in case you wondered, The Window is the sister-truck of Tri La Bite. The El Pastor
(Actual recipe from Alan Vannoy, proprietor of Cow Dog Hotdogs)

6 Hebrew National frankfurters, butterflied
1 cup canned pineapple tidbits
½ cup chopped red onion
6 good hot dog buns grilled on the inside with butter
½ cup Lime Mayonnaise
½ cup Cilantro Pesto

Grill franks on both sides until lightly browned. Grill pineapple and onions combined in a small skillet until lightly caramelized. Top grilled buns with caramelized pineapple and onion. Place grilled frank on top of mixture and drizzle with Lime Mayonnaise and Cilantro Pesto. Wrap each dog in foil or paper, and consume soon.

Lime Mayonnaise (makes 1-1/2 cups)
juice and grated zest of 2 limes
1-1/2 cups quality mayonnaise
Thoroughly stir together ingredients. Store in fridge.

Cilantro Pesto (makes 1-1/2 cups)
2 bunches fresh cilantro
½ cup pecan pieces sauteed in 3 tablespoons butter
¼ cup good olive oil
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
juice of 1 lime
½ teaspoon salt
¼ cup distilled water
Combine all ingredients in food processor and puree completely. Store in fridge.

      1. The newspaper didn’t catch it, either… I hate when that happens!!! Thank you again.
